Each year, 22 May marks the anniversary of the day in 2010 when Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas in the first Bitcoin transaction. The day has become legendary and this year we will be marking the occasion in Bury St Edmunds.
Friday 22nd May 2026 will see a day of bitcoin meet-ups in the historic town of Bury St Edmunds (resting place of England’s true patron saint) before an evening event featuring free pizza, free drink, and on stage debates from leading voices in the UK Bitcoin scene; they will be discussing the topic of ‘Bitcoin as a medium of exchange’.
During the day, we will be supporting businesses in Bury St Edmunds who already accept bitcoin payments. All of the venues are within a short walk of each other and are close to the evening venue. The day’s itinerary will include:
Alema for some sensational coffee
Meat & Greet steak house for all the carnivores out there
Procopio’s Pantry for Peter’s famous chilli scones
Verve for cocktails
With more details yet to be released!
Whilst you’re in town, you could also plan a visit to Carter’s Barbers for a fresh trim or even book in at Bury Physio for a range of health services including acupuncture, sports massage and more.
In the evening, we will make our way to the Guildhall, a medieval Grade 1 listed building situated in the heart of Bury St Edmunds. The building is one of the oldest civil buildings in the country, with records going back as far as the 1100's. Find out more here. As well as food and drink, there will also be a pop-up market for you to continue spending those sats. Speakers for the event already confirmed, in alphabetical order, are:
